As Retail Sales continue to disappoint, we make a move on a Cash-Strapped Consumer play

Welcome to this week’s edition of Tematica Investing. This week, you’ll see our greater emphasis on a thematic approach to investing on full display, as we dig into the realities of the economic slowdown and its impact on what we call the Cash-Strapped Consumer. We also jump right into the crunch between the Aging of the Population and the Scarce Resource trend it is creating — a nursing shortage.

In this week’s edition of Tematica Investing:

  • March Retail Sales once again disappointed expectations and contracted for the second time in 2016.
  • Tomorrow morning, we are adding Cash Strapped Consumer play Costco Wholesale (COST) shares to the Tematica Select List with a price target of $170. This is a new position and therefore there is no recommended stop loss at this time. We would look to add COST shares up to $153, and would look to build the position aggressively between $140-$145.
  • Spinning out of our Thematic Signals, we have identified AMN Healthcare Services (AHS), a potential Aging of the Population/Scarce Resource candidate.
  • All that and more thematic confirmation ripped from the headlines

Chris Versace, Chief Investment Officer
I'm the Chief Investment Officer of Tematica Research and editor of Tematica Investing newsletter. All of that capitalizes on my near 20 years in the investment industry, nearly all of it breaking down industries and recommending stocks. In that time, I've been ranked an All Star Analyst by Zacks Investment Research and my efforts in analyzing industries, companies and equities have been recognized by both Institutional Investor and Thomson Reuters’ StarMine Monitor. In my travels, I've covered cyclicals, tech and more, which gives me a different vantage point, one that uses not only an ecosystem or food chain perspective, but one that also examines demographics, economics, psychographics and more when formulating my investment views. The question I most often get is "Are you related to…."
