Just this past week in a conversation with a product manager at prominent financial services company we explained the evolving components of our Safety & Security investment theme. Cutting across individual, cyber, corporate and homeland security, the Safety and Security theme looks to companies that offer products and services across the range from corporate security and monitoring solutions to firearms arms and home-security to cyber-security and defense spending. The realities of this situation came about this week in Manchester England and the realities of its impact on the entertainment and sports industry.
The Safety & Security theme is as much of a mindset as it is a macro-economic tailwind, and it’s indistinguishable as to where one application of this theme ends and another begins. The M&A activity in the defense contracting sector for cyber firms as the “battlefield” increasingly expands into the digital world is just one case in point. Another component arises when we look to the Internet of Things (IoT) and the increasing reality that even our own personal possessions could be rendered useless through a cyber attack unleashed by a foreign government or other entity. In 2015 for example, Black Hat hacked a 2014 Jeep Cherokee over the internet and paralyzed it on I-64 forcing Chrysler to recall 1.4 million vehicles.
It’s this reality that the Safety & Security Index taps into as it covers the full range of companies participating in the security and monitoring of our homes, families, companies and homeland. For more details, check out our Tematica Investing trial and the companies we’re looking at as part of this theme.
